King Crimson - "Court of The Crimson King"
Recently Sean has really been getting into this band. And to be honest, I'm surprised neither of us had given them a good listen before. King Crimson is an amazing English band that started recording music in the late 1960's. I really love this song in particular. When I first heard it, I immediately recognized it from the movie Children of Men. It is such an epic song, all nine minutes of it.

God, I am in love with these adorable Swedish sisters. They have almost angelic voices that manage to be both soft & sweet and rich at the same time. I can't stop listening to them, and prancing around the house singing their version of Fleet Foxes' "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song" (only when no one else is home and I can be obnoxiously loud). They're quite young, I can only imagine them growing and developing musically over the next few years. Great female folky indie, CHECK IT! At the very least, look them up on YouTube.

Decided to do a little back 2 school thrifting and found a couple of gems..

FAVORITE! Deep purple and pink paisley floral one piece, cut off into romper.

White with large pale floral print. Did a wonky job cutting it off, making the bottom sit uneven. Perhaps I should be more careful when I cut length off. Looks very 1950's housewife or something and makes me feel like I should be baking cupcakes.

With all the 90's trends popping back up, I figured I'd get a head start (ok, this might be pushing the limits, but FUCK IT). It was 70% off of the already low price and I couldn't pass up the deliciously tacky bedazzled glory this denim romper offers.

Light pink dress. I wanna wear my cowboy boots with this but they kind of cause a scene. Last time I wore them, someone at UNF shouted "YEEHAW" at me.

I suppose it's a little late to be blogging about this album since it came out quite a bit earlier this month, but oh well. When I heard Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend and Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot were collaborating on a side project, I was pretty excited and had high hopes, as I enjoy both of their respective bands. I know a lot of people have shit with Vampire Weekend, but their first album is just so laid back, simple, and poppy. And although Ra Ra Riot is just starting to really get their name out there, I remember seeing them at Jackrabbits a little over a year ago, and I think a lot of people left impressed. Their set was really good, and it is refreshing to see a band with multiple string instruments (other than guitars of course). But anyway, it seems that working together Rostam and Miles could just not make it happen. The album is very "eh", and while some of it could be described as okay, none of it sticks out as anything special and some of the songs are just plain bad. There are two covers on the album, Ra Ra Riot's "Can You Tell" (god, the original is so much better) and the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" (it is shameful to disgrace a classic like that). Most of the other songs are not even worth commenting on. The only two songs that even somewhat spark my interest are the following:

I have had a lot of time to try to find new music lately because my only way of listening to tunes has been playlist.com, thanks to my practicly new external harddrive quitting out of nowhere (FUCK YOU WESTERN DIGITAL). So after my playlist had me bored (which was fast, I only had a couple of bands on there), I decided to do some LastFM browsing. LastFM is every music lover's bestfriend, in case you didn't get the memo. It tracks what bands and songs you listen to, builds charts of how frequently you listen to them, and then makes recommendations of new bands to try out based on information they've gathered. Plus, they have awesome online radio where you can listen by 'similar bands' or genre, or whatever.

ANYWAY, clicking around I happened upon Timber Timbe. I added them to my playlist, and over the last couple of days they have really stood out and caught my attention. Out of the woods of Canada, Timber Timbre produces almost haunting, lo-fi folk that is really simple but wonderful. Kind of weirdly ethereal in a way, kind of makes you feel like you're relaxing on the porch of a log cabin, maybe about to hop a train, with a slight old time blues/country tint to it. Definitely worth a listen. At least watch the video for the song "Oh Messiah" (above) for its awesome incorporation of "Twist and Shout."

What I wore to play house wife, cleaning and cooking and whatnot all day. Even though its relatively simple, I am rather fond of the getup, which is why its getting posted.

I attempted to clean up the books I salvaged from the garage behind out house. They are college textbooks from the 1960's I think. The one in the middle with the mandala is a psychology book, and my favorite. However, it was in by far the worst shape. Unfortunately, I had to cut off and dispose of the front cover, which is almost identical to the back cover (which is shown) because it was just peeling and falling apart everywhere.

MADE DELICIOUS FOODS.
- Jasmine rice
- Sauteed squash, zucchini, mushrooms, and tempeh in soy sauce with ginger and garlic powder, and i think a touch of cumin
- Sprouts, which I really only included because you get so many in a package, and i never use them all. They were a surprisingly nice touch.
- AND THE BEST PART:

House of Tsang Bangkok Peanut Sauce.
SOOOO GOOOD. It kind of has a bite to it, which is awesome. Buy this, smother your life in it, and thank me.

For some reason, I am DYING to get some ridiculous nail art. My job wouldn't even let me have painted nails, which was obviously a bummer, but since my short stint at making burritos is over, and it is summertime, I might splurge and get some rhinestones and whathaveyou glued onto my fingertips soon.
Last spring when I visited Shellie in Los Angeles, we splurged and got matching fake leopard print nails. If I remember correctly, they were around $80, but man, they were worth it. They looked awesome and stayed flawless for over 2 weeks. I think ideally, I would have something ridiculous, like American flag nails, or nails with pandas and kitten faces on them. Maybe something involving neon colors, polka dots, or glue on bows. Drool and/or giggle at the following prime examples of nail art.

XPLORADOR CHARDONNAY. They've been carrying this delicious Chilean wine at the convenience store around the corner, and its only $6.99 for two bottles! I'm not a wine expert by any means, but as far as cheap wines go, hot damn.

My favorite thrift store in town had 50% off everything in the whole store (INCLUDING FURNITURE, WHAT!) for Memorial Day. I managed to snatch up this beast for a cool 30 bux! The pattern is so ridiculous and it's rather comfy. It's a tad worn, but that just means it's all broken in and ready to chill. And hey, it doesn't smell, and it's ALL MINE.

VINTAGE CHILDREN'S BOOKS: ONE

So, I have always been interested in old children's books. The art and illustrations are just amazing, the style is so fun and definitely distinct! Just so much more original and creative than a lot of books that come out today. While on a Flickr quest today I stumbled upon scans from Big Mother Goose: the Original Book of Psychedelic Nursery Rhymes by Larry Bowser. This book is crazy, and I can't believe it was actually published for children. Let alone by Hallmark! Totally written for and by stoners. Or perhaps a satirical poke at hippie culture? It is rather hard to find, and is considered a collectible. On Amazon it is going for upwards of $70 or $80! So check it out! Can you imagine the uproar that would be caused if this came out today? Lawdy.

KIDDIE POOL. This one, which was designed by Cynthia Rowley for Target, is so incredibly cute. I cannot find it on their website, but supposedly it is only $10! Get on that shit!

GO CAMPING. Man, I love camping. I'm not usually an outdoorsy person, but there is not much better than hanging with friends, boozin' it up, possibly swimmin', and just generally lettin' loose. I'm looking forward to hitting up Hannah Park and/or Huguenot. I have a goal of going camping 5x this summer, CAN I DO IT?

Things to bring to make a camping trip even more awesome than usual: an itunes boombox, a grill, some veggie dogs, smores supplies, bathing suits, lotsa pillows, water balloons, bug spray, people who will not to object to midnight games of truth or dare or flashlight hide and seek.

I always really sucked at Super Smash Brothers. Or.. thought I did. Turns out I just didn't know to properly execute attacks! There are a lot of different buttons and combos to keep track of- or at least for me, because I'm only half a nerd, a wannabe nerd, if you will. So, after some practice with Sean and figuring out what to actually do, I kind of like the game! I enjoy playing as Pikachu cos you can zap people and call down lightening. SUP SUCKAS. Eventually I might even get good, how 'bout that!

BEER BEER AND MORE BEER. Okay, and maybe some gin and juice... and wine. You get the point. Either way, I tried out two drinking games while I was there and did not get sick! YES! I rather enjoyed playing Power Hour, taking a shot of beer every minute for an hour (or until beer runs out). And landmines was fun once I figured out how to properly spin a quarter (who knew one could have so much trouble with that).

One night after engaging in some of the aforementioned booze, a late night Albertson's trip lead us to magically GLOW CROSSES. You know once I saw them I was drawn like a fucking magnet to them. After getting an employee to scrounge up some quarters for me, I was bestowed with this glorious purple cross. It glowed all night and into the next morning!

My new giant maneki neko! Its arm moves up and down with batteries! Fifteen bux well spent!

Clara Bow is PRECIOUS. But not in the completely innocent way, there is something very mysterious and seductive about her as well. Like you wanna stroll through the park holding hands, picking daisies, and eating icecream cones with sprinkles together, and then take her back to your place, drink some wine, listen to old soul records, and try to make a smooth move by placing your hand on her leg or something. But nothing too sexual and forward because SHE IS A LADY.

Now, how can you channel some Clara Bow into your everyday getups to add insta class and sass? May I suggest...

I WANTED THIS SO BAD WHEN I SAW IT IN THE STORE. I feel like it is a really cute but not over the top accessory to snazz up a simple dress. I feel like I would wear this with a black dress, knee high black socks, and some flats. But that's just me.

When I first saw a commercial for this, I was so excited. I really love the idea of wearing lip color, but let's face it, I'm wayyy to messy and ridiculous for lipstick. Whenever I wear it, I usually end up smearing it or getting it on my teeth or something equally as awful. This stuff is the perfect solution! I own it in 'flirty nude', but trust me, it's not nude. It's a nice solid red that is not too bright or fire engine colored. It goes on a little dry, but put on a little lip balm or gloss and you're set. I am really happy with this product.

Clara's style is hard to pin point, because it seems as if it's either one way or the other: simplistic with basics or over the top with a lot going on and tons of flair. Some of the pictures I saw of her while browsing Flickr were rather nautical, and I figured this skirt had both the bow and pleats that seemed to be a common theme, so it works. Really, I think most skirts that are vintage looking with high waists, pleats, and/or bows could be easy to pair with above things in helping to form a cute outfit.

I will have my first semester off this summer (WHEEW!) and I am excited to be able to do some ~me~ things.

I would love to get into yoga. For one thing, I feel like I'm not as flexible as I used to be and it really irks me! Some Nancy Scheper-Hughes. She is an amazing anthropologist. I've read some of her work on poor mothers in Brazil (from her book Death Without Weeping), and the way she writes and handles situations is pretty amazing and inspiring. Perhaps I will read Small Wars: The Cultural Politics of Childhood or Saints, Scholars, and Schizophrenics: Mental Illness in Rural Ireland.

House of Leaves by Mark D. Danielewski. I keep on hearing about this book, both good things and bad. It is supposedly written in a really different fashion, and apparently hard to read, even. But none the less, I'd like to read it and form my own opinion on it. I hope it is just as scary/creepy as people say it is.

I need to take advantage of living so freakin' close to the beach. I always forget that most people have to drive hours to get the ocean. And Huguenot Beach is just so nice. It's awesome to be able to drive on the beach, the giant rock there are super fun to climb on, and it's really scenic with the sand dunes and whatnot. Hopefully next time I go there will be no jellyfish all up in my swim space! D:

Sigh. I had my Polaroid camera in the floor of my passenger side in the front seat, and like the dumbass I am (or can be, probably just laziness), I left a large jug of water up there, leftover from when we went to the beach. I guess somehow it popped a leak, and while I haven't tested it, it was clearly drenched and dripping water when I picked it up, so... yeah :[

Turns out he is an extraordinary artist, and although high fashion is usually not my thing, his pictures are whimsical and colorful and are so much more than simply showcasing clothing.

70's INTERIOR DESIGN

While browsing Flickr I came across scanned photos from a book called the Practical Encyclopedia of Good Decorating and Home Improvement. Apparently it was a series of books published around 1970 that covered all sorts of aspects of interior design, from color and lights effects on it, to how to add personality to your home. These rooms have personality for sure. Maybe too much? You decide. Personally, I'm a fan.

This is a picture of a kid's bedroom. I like the pop-art feel. For some reason it makes me think of Lichtenstein? I think the shelf is a creative divider of sorts between the beds. Besides the decor, the furniture is really basic & looks like it could be purchased at Ikea. I really adore the primary colors and polka dots, and while it would drive me crazy now, I think I would have really loved it as a child.

This kitchen is the color of atomic vomit, and I couldn't love it more. The awful kinda mustardy yellow and grass green are the kitschiest color combo. I think my favorite detail is how the wallpaper continues onto the ceiling. Or maybe the rainbow striped floor? Hmm...

I don't even know where to start with this bathroom. Yes, I said bathroom. Majestic, isn't it? The lush white shag carpeting and shiny silver accents are nothing compared to the circular architecture. Space-agey, if I do say so myself! I love how the tub is the focal point in the room, and how it has shower curtains only on two sides. Oh how I would adore having the sit down hair drier (tucked away next to the toilet with the magazine rack). However, how this bathroom is any sort of "practical" is unknown to me.

The first thing I like about this room is the shelving. I love wall shelving and I love that it is not only in one spot in the room but covers the whole wall. Anyone who knows me should know of my fondness for kitschy collectibles. AND HELLO. WHOLE WALL FULL OF 'EM. Also, I really like the typical 70's fireplace. They sure don't make them like that anymore!

The color palate of my dreams! I really like the unconventional bed frame/canopy, and how the detail on the top of the dresser matches. I am totally digging the wallpaper. What a ridiculous pattern! They really stick to the purple, blue, and pink theme nicely, but the gold of the teapot and lamp definitely help to mix it up and make it not as monotonous.

Someone wanna purchase me the 18 volume hardback set on Amazon? You know I will love you forever.

I love the colors in the pattern at the bottom of this dress! I'm digging the kinda bohemian/retro style they are trying to channel. The belt is detatchable, which is great because I'm not sure how I feel about it. I do think it should be belted, but the belt they chose to include is not the right fit, in my opinion.

I am so late on the Animal Collective train. They are one of those bands that you hear about over and over but for some reason never look into. Based on the name, I pictured them as a group of long bearded, flannel plaid button up shirt wearing, sad bastard indie rock playing band. Boy, was I wrong. Please watch this video of Michael Eric Dyson and Pat Buchanan discussing the recent comments made by Attorney General Eric Holder regarding the issue of race in the United States. Major props to Dyson for calmly and intelligently defending his point. I'm reading his book his book Debating Race right now, and while I'm only a few chapters in, I am already very impressed with how well spoken and knowledgeable he is. The book is going to be a great read. Buchanan on the other hand was a major disappointment, he made a total ass of himself. Yeah, telling Dyson he needs to work on "fixing" his people is really professional, dickwad.

I like berries. I like chai tea. I had never thought about combining the two, but once Starbucks came out with this drink, I thought "hey, why not". I WILL TELL YOU WHY NOT. Because this drink tastes like spicy warm berry cider. DO NOT WANT. I think it is possible that it would taste better chilled, but I am afraid to spend my money on trying it. This is the first time I have ever thrown out a Starbucks drink. It was unpleasant and not worth drinking at all.

I say bring back the drink they had around five years ago that was some sort of Tazo Brambleberry tea slush. Big fan of that. Bring that back instead of bringing in this nastiness.

I'm not sure who Big Bear is exactly, but obviously he's a cool dude. CHILLIN' WITH BEARS. It's brilliant. The cigars! The bling! The purple velvet! The fruit? One of my friends showed me this a while ago, and I seriously think about it way more than I should. It's gotten to the point where all I have to do is think "BIG BEAR: DOIN' THANGS" in my head and I just can't help but laugh. I'm not sure how this album cover hasn't become an internet sensation or something.

Black lacy thigh high tights, motherfucker. Yes, I am aware (as a friend lovingly pointed out) that these are "slut tights". Do I care? NOPE. Not only are they cute & feminine, they're practical (you don't have to pull 'em down to pee!), and relatively cheap. Plus, no one knows what you're secretly hiding under your dress or skirt. They're sassy and fun and I really don't care if people think it's trashy! Mine don't have the classy back seam down the back though, which is unfortunate. I plan on wearing mine all winter!

I LOVE THIS PLAYLIST! Perfect for sleeping, but also ideal for any other situation. All of these songs hold a similar kind of appeal to me, but I can't put my finger on the words to describe it. I keep coming up with airy, lighthearted, almost whimsical, soft, beautiful. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but all of these songs seriously make my brain sing.

NATALIE PORTMAN'S SHAVED HEAD

Natalie Portman's Shaved Head is an up & coming band from Seattle. I am just starting to get into them, but they are quickly working their way into my heart. Can't say no to their electo pop loveliness!

I wanted to hate this band. At first glance, they just screamed stereotypical "CHECK ME OUT IM SO HIP AND WEIRD AND ELECTRIC!!11!" to me. The neon colors, the synth, the rainbow diamond ironic obnoxious whatever trendy bug that seems to be infecting everyone. However, once I realized that there is no way they actually take themselves seriously, I could give them a real listen, and I'm a tad ashamed to say I'm hooked.

I first fell in love with "Me + Yr Daughter", and it is still one of my favorite car jams. The beat is fucking infectious and the song is just so danceable and catchy. Then, while at Steamworks someone mentioned "Beard Lust" (which I have been known to have). This song is 100% ridiculous and I love it. Such a mood booster, you really can't help but sing along and smile. Seriously, I dare you to deny the beauty of these lyrics: "Clean it, and scent with violet. Love it, but don't get violent. Rub it, but not in public." VIOLET SCENTED BEARDS, YEAH! Last but not least, the past few days it is seriously "Bedroom Costume" on repeat. Hey! A song about voyeurism! I'm into it!

I have a big thing for mixed media art. Greg Gossel makes beautiful pieces that are inspired by vintage cartoons and Lichtenstein (♥) type pop art. A lot of his work also has some political messages. Really lovely, original stuff.

I wish there was more artwork to look at in her portfolio. Her style is fucking awesome. Bright colors, psychedelic influences, bizarro creatures. Her stuff just makes me so happy.

Johnny Yanok makes really kitschy pieces with a retro flair. I'm really glad that I found his page, because he is the genius behind this neat Target gift card that I always have to stop to admire. I also really enjoy this illustration of the United States. Think I'm gonna have to make it my new desktop!

What I like about Damien Weighill is his the simplicity of his pieces. A lot of his stuff is just basic sketches and illustrations, which is what I like. Even though his art isn't crazy complex and didn't take hours upon hours to complete, its fucking awesome. His blog Your Faceis also worth taking a look at. All of the art posted there is inspired by pictures sent in by his blog readers. What a splendid concept!

Let me just start this out by saying that I am usually not a fan of remixes. Especially remixes of indie songs. I remember walking into TSI once and hearing a remix of Feist's "1 2 3 4", and i was just blown away. But not in the good way. I thought it was terrible and I questioned why anyone would feel the need to ruin a perfectly good song that way. However, I have recently stumbled upon a certain group of artists from around the world who come together as the Remix Artist Collective(RAC) and make AMAZING remixes that actually enhance the original and make the songs beautiful instead of turning them into an over-the-top electronic pile of shit! So, please do your ears a big favor and check these out:

Ra Ra Riot Manner To Act
I really enjoy Ra Ra Riot. I saw them perform at Jack Rabbits a couple of months ago, and it was pretty amazing. They have a great energy, and they really are quite talented. Not to mention it is pretty awesome that they have both violin and cello players. I was worried that a remix would just be disastrous, but they definitely proved me wrong. This is the song that really turned me on to RAC. It's absolutely stunning.

Ok, so i guess titling this post "end of summer" is just a lie because YOU KNOW it will stay hot in Florida for at least 2 more months. But regardless, here's a post dedicated to the loves of my life lately!

SKA AND DUB AND REGGAE
DELICIOUS!
I used to be really into ska. I guess it started in middle school with awful local ska bands. Then I got into all the pop ska stuff (Big D & The Kids Table, MU330, Planet Smashers, etc). It wasn't until mid high school that I came across real, straight up Jamaican ska. And through exploring that, I came to really appreciate reggae and dub stuff too. I came across a pile of old cds a few days ago, and one of them happened to be a mix called "Trad + Shit" (clever, right) from 2 or so years ago. I popped it into my car cd played, and it has not left since! Man, it is some good stuff. Desmond Dekker, The Maytals, The Paragons, Laurel Aitken, Derrick Morgan. I had forgotten how fucking good it was! And now its kinda all I wanna listen to.

OK, IF WHEN IM NOT JAMMIN TO SKA, IM PROBABLY LISTENING TO LATIN MUSIC.
I am completely in love with this song by Cuban band Los Zafiros. It makes me picture dancing in the rainforest or something. And Os Mutantes is super amazing as well. I want more! I needa download/burn some STAT.

I hate the color orange usually. I like to blame it on my first boyfriend who LOVED the color so much he wore an orange tux to prom. But anyway, recently I have noticed a lot of people sporting the orange nails, and i decided to give it a go. Im actually pretty stoked with results! I still like white polish the most though. PISTACHIO CUPCAKES?!

The other day while thinking about the joys of pistachio pudding, it struck me that if I could somehow combine its greatness with one of my other favorite things, cupcakes, that my life might be complete. I have been day dreamin' a lot about ice cream cone cupcakes recently, too. I hadn't even thought about them in years, but they randomly popped into my head. Makes me think of elementary school and class parties! So I thought "HEY, WHY NOT COMBINE 'EM?", and decided to try to kill two sugary birds with one stone.

They were very easy to make! Most of the ingredients are things you probably already have laying around the kitchen (milk, eggs, flour, etc). The only thing you might need to pick up is the box of pistachio pudding mix. Also, the recipe calls for a cup of crushed pistachios, but I was in a rush at the grocery store and accidentally picked up the Planter's Pistachio Lovers nut mix. I was in no mood to go through and sort out the pistachios, plus they were salted, so I said "fuck it". I'm sure they would have been a nice touch, but they were fine without it.

That being said, they turned out pretty ok! They could use a little more pistachio flavor, which might have been my fault since I nixed the crushed pistachios. However, I think that if I try these again, I will probably just put in a little more pudding mix.

The cake itself was very moist, but had a different sort of texture. Not awful, but a little too thick? Doughy almost? I think I have experienced the consistency with vegan cakes before. But I am no baking expert and don't know what could be done to fix this issue.

The only other thing to be aware of is that when pouring in the batter, you need to almost fill the cone to the top. Most of mine were about 3/4s full, but I guess thats not enough! Ideally, the cake would have risen a little more, and would have come up above cone level. Something I will keep in mind in the future!

So overall, I was satisfied with what came out of my baking adventure, but they'll probably be better next time. I give em a 6.5 leaning towards 7 out of 10.

What happens when you mix Dr Suess with Tim Burton? Edward Gorey. Although that is probably an awful way to describe him, as Burton was clearly influenced by Gorey's style.

Edward Gorey was an American artist with an affection for the macabre. While he did gain some recognition with his Grammy winning set and costume design for Broadway's production of Dracula and his PBS show Mystery!, he is most remembered and loved for his unusual books. At first glance they look like children's books, but the content is definitely unconventional, and even dark at times. He wrote more than 100 books during his career, including Dancing Cats And Neglected Murderesses, The Beastly Baby, and The Prune People. Many titles are hard to find, which is a shame because in addition to the bizarre themes, some of his books were pop up. Does it really get any better than fucked up pop up books?

Between taking an African American Musical Heritage class and hanging with Jon, whose musical knowledge is just crazy, I am becoming really interested in lotsa music that I never really bothered with before. It's not that I was opposed to listening to it, I just hadn't been exposed to it. But something clicked and I'm kinda all about it! BRING ON DA FUNKY JAMZ!
